Litmaps
Citation maps that grow from seed papers, with monitoring that alerts you when new papers connect to your map.
- Free plan or free tier
Builds a visual graph of papers related to one starting paper, grouping similar work so you can spot clusters and older foundations.
Connected Papers takes one paper you already know and draws a graph of related work around it. Papers that share many references and citations sit close together, node size reflects citation count, and color shows publication year, so older foundational work and recent follow-ups are easy to tell apart.
It is useful at the start of a thesis chapter or when you enter a new subfield. From the graph you can open lists of prior works that many papers in the cluster build on, and derivative works that cite many of them, which often surface review articles and key methods papers.
The graph reflects citation patterns, not quality or agreement. A paper can be central because it is widely criticized. Use the graph to find candidates, then read them, and repeat the search from two or three different seed papers so one starting point does not narrow your view.
