Qualitative data analysis

Qualitative data analysis software helps you organize and code interviews, focus groups, field notes and open-ended survey answers. The established tools have added AI features that summarize documents, suggest codes and search across transcripts.

MAXQDA, ATLAS.ti and NVivo are the three most widely used packages in universities, and each now offers AI assistance alongside its manual coding tools. MAXQDA and ATLAS.ti both suggest codes and summaries from your material. NVivo adds AI-assisted autocoding and summaries to its long-standing coding and query features. All three handle text, audio and video, and support team projects.

3 AI research tools in qualitative data analysis

MAXQDA

by VERBI Software

Qualitative and mixed methods analysis software with AI Assist for summarizing documents and suggesting codes.

ATLAS.ti

by ATLAS.ti Scientific Software Development

Qualitative data analysis software with AI coding suggestions for interviews, focus groups and open-ended survey answers.

NVivo

by Lumivero

Long-established qualitative analysis software for coding text, audio and video, with AI-assisted autocoding and summaries.

In qualitative research, your interpretation is the method. AI suggestions can help you see patterns or speed up a first pass, but you need to read the data and make the coding decisions, and describe any AI use in your methods. Check your consent forms and ethics approval before sending transcripts to any AI feature that processes data off your computer, and ask whether your university license includes a data agreement.

The three packages differ in interface, licensing and how they handle team projects, more than in what they can do. Many students simply use whichever one their university licenses and offers training for, which is a sensible choice since support and colleagues who know the tool matter a lot. If you have a free choice, try the trial versions with a few of your own transcripts and see which way of working suits your method, whether that is thematic analysis, grounded theory or framework analysis. Keep a codebook and memo your decisions as you go, so your process is clear to examiners and reviewers.

Questions about qualitative data analysis

Can AI code my interviews for me?

It can suggest codes and summaries, but qualitative analysis depends on your reading and judgment. Use suggestions as a first pass, review every code, and report how AI was used in your methods.

Is it ethical to use AI on interview transcripts?

That depends on what participants consented to and what your ethics approval allows. Check whether the AI feature sends data to outside servers, and remove identifying details first.

Which qualitative software does my university support?

Many universities license NVivo, ATLAS.ti or MAXQDA and offer training. Ask your library or research office before buying a personal license.

Can I move a project between these programs?

Partly. Several support the REFI-QDA exchange format for moving coded projects, though some features may not transfer. Test with a small project first.
